When it comes to choosing pallets for your business, sustainability’s a key factor in 21st century businesses, and for good reason. Companies across the supply chain are being pushed to reduce waste, cut emissions and make more eco-conscious decisions. One of the big debates? Plastic pallets and wooden pallets. Which is better for the environment?
How They’re Made Matters

Wooden pallets are usually made from virgin timber, which means trees have to be cut down to produce them. Even if the wood’s from a managed forest, it still involves logging, processing and transportation, all of which leave a carbon footprint. They’re also often treated with chemicals to meet international shipping regulations.
Plastic pallets, on the other hand are typically made from recycled materials like HDPE or PP. The manufacturing process does require energy, but there’s no deforestation involved. Many plastic pallets are also part of a closed-loop system, meaning they’re designed to be recycled and reused again and again.
So, in terms of sourcing and manufacturing, plastic already has a leg up, especially if you’re using recycled versions.
Which has Better Longevity?
A wooden pallet might only last three to five trips before it’s too damaged to reuse. They’re prone to splintering, breaking and can easily be affected by moisture or pests. Because of this, many end up in landfill far sooner than you’d think.
Where as our sustainable plastic pallets are built to last. They can handle over 100 trips over several years without breaking a sweat. They won’t absorb moisture, they’re resistant to most chemicals and they don’t attract pests or mould. That kind of longevity means fewer pallets need to be produced, transported and disposed of, which is good news for the planet.
Disposal & Recycling
At the end of their useful life, wooden pallets can sometimes be chipped down for mulch or fuel. But often, especially if they’re damaged or treated with chemicals, they’re simply thrown away. Plastic pallets are fully recyclable. Many suppliers offer take-back schemes where they recycle the pallets to create new ones, keeping the loop closed and reducing waste.
Transport & Efficiency
Weight is another factor that’s often overlooked. Wooden pallets are heavier than plastic, which adds to fuel usage during transport. Plastic pallets are not only lighter, they’re also more consistent in shape and size, ideal for automated systems and neat stacking.
Why Plastic Pallets are Beneficial

Why plastic pallets tend to be the greener option:
- Made from recycled materials, no trees needed
- Longer lifespan, often over 10 years
- Fully recyclable at end of life
- Lightweight and efficient for transport
- Hygienic and resistant to pests, mould and chemicals
While wooden pallets might seem more natural at first glance, plastic pallets are often the more environmentally friendly choice when you consider their full life cycle. They’re durable, reusable, recyclable and a smarter fit for modern, sustainable logistics.
