What Are Pallet Collars Used For?

Pallet collars are hinged frames that sit on top of a standard pallet to turn it into a box. Stacking more collars makes the box deeper. Once a lid is added, the loaded units can be stacked. When empty, collars fold flat, so they take up very little storage or return space.

How do pallet collars work?

Each collar is four panels joined by hinges at the corners. Unfolded, it fits the perimeter of a pallet, and metal corner fittings locate each collar securely on the one below. Each collar adds a fixed height, so you build the box to suit the load and remove collars as the load gets smaller.

What are pallet collars used for?

Pallet collars are used for storing and moving goods that won’t stack safely on an open pallet:

  • Food and agriculture: potatoes, root vegetables, fruit and bulk ingredients
  • Manufacturing and automotive: components, castings and work-in-progress
  • Warehousing and 3PL: loose, irregular or fragile items that need protection
  • Retail and e-commerce: returns, overstock and seasonal stock
  • Horticulture: plants, bulbs and compost

What sizes do pallet collars come in?

Pallet collars are made to fit the two most common pallet footprints: 1200×1000mm (UK standard) and 1200×800mm (Euro). Always match the collar to the pallet it will sit on.

Why use pallet collars instead of fixed boxes?

  • Adjustable height: add or remove collars as the load changes
  • Space saving: fold flat when not in use
  • Stackable storage: lidded units can be stacked, which frees up floor space
  • Lower cost: reuse existing pallets rather than buying rigid containers

Can pallet collars be used for export?

Yes. Wooden pallet collars shipped internationally, including from Great Britain to the EU, must be heat treated and stamped under ISPM 15. Plastic alternatives are exempt from ISPM 15.

Are pallet collars suitable for food?

Pallet collars are widely used for bulk produce such as potatoes. For direct contact with food, or in high-care areas, many food businesses use a liner or choose plastic pallet boxes, which are easier to clean. See how Exporta supports food production and distribution.
