As the name suggests, nestable pallets nest inside one another. The cost to produce a Nestable Pallet is usually anywhere between 50 and 80 percent lower than the cost to produce a stackable pallet. So not only can they save you money, but also space when not in use. We take a look at this benefit and more in our Top 5 Reasons to Choose Nestable Pallets.
#1 – It`s Nestable (not a very obvious attribute!).
Saves space in storage & transport.
These savings also mean less impact on the environment, because more can be moved in less space. So that`s saving on fuel, tyres, CO2, truck & forklift movements, etc.
To put some relevance, you can get approx. 3X nestable plastic pallets in the same space as a traditional wooden pallet. So if you base on £600 to move a full trailer load, that`s £400 saving by using nestable plastic than wood.
(Obviously we are talking about the supply of empty pallets for use, not pallets in use with your goods on – will come to that shortly)
#2 – Consistent performance and dimensions
Wood comes from trees, and all trees have branches (especially the cheaper varieties used for packaging). Branches create knots which have a habit of falling out when the timber is machined.
How much does this (and other natural defects) weaken a wooden pallet?
I don`t know & guess you don`t either!
By its very manufacturing method of high pressure injection moulding, every plastic pallet of a type will have the same performance under load. e.g. if we state 900kg dynamic load, you can let your process run in confidence that every plastic pallet used will arrive with your goods intact.
Equally, plastic pallets aren’t affected by humidity, and other factors that wood will absorb to distort the dimensions
#3 – Cleanliness.
Like damp, wood has an inherent ability to absorb dirt, grime & other muck, which then has an unfortunate ability to transfer to your goods placed on these pallets. Slightly annoying.
Plastic is in a league of it`s own. For a start, it is never going to absorb anything like this. Plus, if something unwanted lands on the surface it can be quickly washed off (and the pallet design makes sure water will drain out).
So every delivery of your goods will arrive looking pristine & impressive to your customers.
#4 – Weight to Load Capacity
So now it`s time to load the pallets & ship your goods. Get the show on the road, as they say.
Every 1200×800 pallet (be it wood or plastic) can fil a full trailer load with 33 spaces. So, no difference there, then.
But a plastic nestable pallet weighs at least 50% of a wooden type. So in addition to the space saving from nesting, there is everyday savings of moving ~250kg less weight per load.
Plus every plastic pallet does what is says on the tin. No more anxieties that the base pallet isn`t going to disintegrate into firewood donations as soon as it leaves your premises.
#5 – End of Life
We often get the comment that it`s easy to recycle old wooden pallets that are no longer fit for use – “I just pile them up and Jamie picks them up when he is next passing” Fair enough, but does look messy while Jamie is elsewhere.
Plastic wins (again) – when you do have plastic pallets that have reached the very end of their useful life, these can be neatly stacked up for collection. Exporta has recycling partners that will expertly re-process the material so it can be used yet again to make many other plastic articles.
You probably think we are anti-wood when it comes to pallets! Not really, we just know the many benefits of plastic when used in storage and transport that we would hate you to be missing out on.
Still not convinced? While you`re removing the splinters from your hands after picking up an existing wooden pallet, think about the savings on cost & environment, and then the improvements to product handling and presentation to your customers by moving to plastic.
